REM star Michael Stipe has paid tribute to late actor Heath Ledger by dedicating a song to him during a recent gig.

The band were playing at SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas on Tuesday when they dedicated the track Until The Day Is Done to the actor.

"This is dedicated to Heath Ledger, who loved this song," said Stipe. He added after the moving tribute, "Goodbye Heath, we loved you."

Ledger died earlier this year after an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

REM played a 90-minute set at Stubb's Bar-B-Q at the burgeoning music festival, where they played nearly every song from their forthcoming album, Accelerate.
